A Brief History of Wintergreen Resort

In 1969, over 11,000 acres of untouched land in Nelson County, VA was purchased by Cabot, Cabot & Forbes with plans to open a large ski area in central Virginia. At this time, the land was termed “The Big Survey”. This company, along with The Sea Pines Company, opened eight ski slopes with three chair lifts in 1975. An investment company called Melba Investors purchased the land in 1976 and founded Wintergreen Development, Inc.

In 1977, Devils Knob Golf Course opened making it the highest elevation course in Virginia. This promoted summer activities at Wintergreen Resort and allowed the Resort to function during all four seasons of the year. Later additions included The Mountain Inn and Conference Center, the Wintergarden Spa, and Stoney Creek Golf Course.

The distinctive logo of Wintergreen Resort is the “checkerberry”. This plant bears a red fruit which, when pinched, gives off an unmistakable wintergreen fragrance.
