The History of Bold Rock Cidery
The founders of Bold Rock Cidery, John Washburn and Brian Shanks, opened the doors in June 2012 in the quaint town of Nellysford, VA in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The two believed less than 10,000 cases of cider would be sold in the first year of business. Boy, were they wrong! In its first year of operation, Bold Rock sold nearly 48,000 cases. This lead them to put the money back into the business and build their signature taproom. The construction of the building incorporated 600 reclaimed oak beams which only add to mountain feel of this unique space.
Within 3 years, business was so good that a taproom was opened at the famous Carter Mountain Orchard in Charlottesville, VA. The views of Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge are just a couple reasons for this being a hot spot to visit in town. 2015 also allowed the opening of a taproom in western North Carolina.
At this time, Bold Rock is the largest independently owned cidery in the United States.
Bold Rock currently produces 17 varieties to help please all taste buds. These varieties all come from locally grown and hand-picked apples in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina.
