The Story of Devils Backbone – A Brief History
Have you ever asked yourself what was the inspiration for one of central Virginia’s premier breweries? Well, the answer starts across the pond in Europe. Founders Steve and Heidi Crandall were on a ski trip in the Alps when they tried their first craft beer. The rest, you might say, is history. They took their love of European style suds and decided to open Devils Backbone in Roseland, VA. And where does the name come from? Well, early settlers and surveyors of this region coined the term due to the difficult nature of reaching the summit of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The doors opened in 2008 and the atmosphere has only gotten better as the years have passed.
Devils Backbone produces numerous styles of beer to satisfy almost every palate. From lagers to pale ales to fruit-inspired lemonade, you should be able to find the perfect flavor for your liking.
They also opened a distillery in 2018 producing award-winning gin, brandy, and rum.
When you visit central Virginia, make sure to stop by Devils Backbone Basecamp for a taste straight from the source. They host regular events every year including Seafood and Brew Fest and Hoopla. Live music, craft beer and spirits, and great food in a mountain setting at the base of Wintergreen Resort. Who could ask for more? Don’t forget about Devils Backbone being only 10 minutes from Virginia’s Premier Four Season Resort. Skiing, hiking, weekend adventures, and so much more!
The story of Devils Backbone is a good story about probably one of your favorite craft breweries!
